Selfie stick is not working? Check these settings for selfie stick on the phone
If your selfie stick is not working with your phone, that is, it is not clicking pictures when the button is pressed, then, don’t throw away your selfie stick yet. It may not be working because of some simple setting issues.
In this post, we cover some settings for selfie stick you should check if your selfie stick is not working with your phone. In this post, we are discussing about the traditional wired selfie sticks with aux cable and not Bluetooth selfie sticks. And this post is particular for Android Phones but, the same may apply to other phones as well.

1) Check these settings for selfie stick on your phone
Most wired selfie sticks with aux cable uses the volume buttons on the phone to take pictures. So, to check the problem, first check the settings for selfie stick on the phone.
- Open the camera app on the phone
- Open the camera’s settings
- Find a setting which is related to volume keys
The menu may be different for different phone models, but you should be able to find a setting related to volume buttons that corresponds to ‘shutter’ or ‘take pictures’.
Some phones have a setting called ‘volume key function‘ (most Mi / Redmi Phones) in the camera settings. This setting defines what the camera will do if the volume up or volume down keys are pressed. The options could be – take a picture, zoom in /zoom out or volume control. On some cameras there is a setting by the name ‘shooting methods’ (Samsung Android Phones). This is where you can set what the camera should do if the volume keys are pressed.
- Just explore the camera settings and find a setting related to volume keys. After you find the volume key settings, set it to ‘shutter’ or ‘click / take pictures’.
- Save the settings, if there is an option to save settings.
2) Test without selfie stick
- Open camera on the Phone
- Press the volume up or down key
- See if picture is taken by the phone.
If you can take pictures using the volume keys then ideally, you are ready to use your selfie stick to take pictures, unless there is some other fault with your selfie stick.
3) Test with the selfie stick
After you confirm that your phone’s camera can take pictures by pressing the volume up or down keys, you can now test your selfie stick with your phone. Ideally your phone should be able to take selfies now after the selfie stick setting update.
4) What to do if your selfie stick still does not take pictures on press
If your selfie stick still does not take pictures when you press the button on the selfie stick, then, you may try the following:
- Check for any wear and tear, cable break on the selfie stick.
- Test the selfie stick with another phone by applying the same settings described above. If it does not work, try with a few other phones if available. That way you can confirm whether the selfie stick is faulty or is not compatible with your Android phone.
- If the selfie stick still does not work, then probably the selfie stick is faulty.
Though unlikely, if your camera does not have any settings to allow the volume buttons to take pictures, then you can also look for camera apps on Google Play. You can install those apps and use it for taking selfies.

Is your selfie photo flipped horizontally (mirrored)?
If you notice that your selfie photo is flipped horizontally or mirrored, then you might want to turn off the mirror effect on your phone. You will particularly notice that the mirror effect in your phone camera settings is turned on if there are some text or numbers in the background – they will appear flipped (mirrorred).
Unless you want the mirror effect for some reason, most users would want to disable the mirror effect. See How to Disable Mirror Effect on Selfie Photos on your phone
