So, what are the equipments required for YouTube Live Streaming, you may ask. Well it depends. But essentially, there are four components you will need to start live streaming. These are:
- a video / audio source
- a video encoder
- a streaming platform
- a stable internet connection
Besides the essential components, you may also need accessories such as, lights, props, tripods etc.
For basic YouTube Live Stream: To do a basic YouTube Live Stream, there is no setup or additional equipment required – a smartphone is all you need. That’s right!
Your smartphone is the video camera to capture video, the microphone to capture audio, and the YouTube App is the software to handle the live stream. You can do this for both indoors as well as outdoors. But for better quality, external camera and microphones are recommended, particularly if you are live streaming for some professional event etc.
Basic YouTube Live Stream Setup – one audio/video source
For a basic YouTube Live Stream Setup as shown below, the essential components are: an internet connection, a video camera, a microphone (optional, if audio is left to the video camera to capture), an encoder software (such as OBS Studio running on a computer), and a streaming platform (YouTube).

1) Computer
As we mentioned above, a smartphone is all we need to start streaming actually. This will work for basic and quick streaming. But for serious streaming, you’ll want to use a modern PC or laptop with a video capture card to avoid video lag, and also to use equipment like a DSLR camera or additional microphone etc.
Any decent computer will do, but just ensure that it is powerful enough to handle the job. Laptops with SSD drive and GPU (graphics card) are recommended such as Lenovo LOQ, MSI Thin A15, Ryzen 5 7535HS. For long streaming hours using laptop, you should also consider heat. You may want to include laptop cooling pad.
Ideally, two monitors are used for streaming – one to watch the stream and chats, and the other to watch the streaming software and other background activities.
2) Video cameras
The most important piece of equipment for YouTube Live Streaming is a reliable video camera. As far as camera is concerned, you can go for camcoders, DSLRs, and even a laptop webcam will work. For indoor budget-friendly options, consider using a webcam like the Logitech C920, which offers great performance without a significant investment.
But if you want quality, it is advisable to invest in a decent video camera. Ensure that the camera supports HDMI output, as this is necessary for connecting it to a streaming device.

3) Microphones

High-quality audio is crucial in live streaming, as poor sound quality can lead to viewer disengagement. A slight decrease in video quality may be forgivable, but not so with audio. So, for professional setup, it is highly advisable to include microphones in your setup.
For live events, all the microphones and PA systems are usually connected to a centralized mixer. So you may not require to install your own microphones. It is highly recommended to get the audio from the sound mixer to your camera for better audio quality. For this, you may need ‘XLR to 3.5mm Aux Jack‘ or ‘6.35mm to 3.5mm audio Cable‘. Most modern mixers will have 3.5mm / 6.5mm audio out port. Otherwise, you will need the ‘XLR to 3.5mm Aux Jack‘.
For streaming your own shows, where you are in control, you can opt depending the requirement.
- For indoors YouTube Live Streaming, you can get a decent condenser mic such as Audio-Technica AT2020.
